Preparation
Ask yourself:
- What am I interested in doing as a volunteer?
- What issues are important to me?
- Do I want to do something at which I'm already proficient?
- Do I want to learn a new skill?
- Do I want to volunteer in something related to my job?
- How much time do I have available to volunteer?
- Do I want to volunteer on a daily, weekly, monthly, occasional basis?
- Can I volunteer during the day, evenings, or on weekends?
- Where do I want to volunteer on Long Island?
- How can I get to the volunteer location - drive, walk, or public transportation?
Review
- Browse the website by zip code, issue area.
- Review the homepage and click the links.
- Look through the list of Organizations and Resources.
Selection
- Register as a Volunteer and select the Opportunities which are possible matches.
- Schedule an appointment to meet with a volunteer coordinator to discover the organization's needs and requirements and how to get involved.
Interview
- Arrange an appointment with the administrator responsible for volunteers.
- Find out what forms and information should be completed and brought to the interview.
- Be prompt and prepared.
- Ask questions that will help you learn whether the position is a good match for you.
- Take a day or two before making a commitment and ask yourself if this is a good match.
On The Job
- Be prepared and punctual.
- Participate and communicate. Ask questions.
- Be committed.
- After spending some time with the organization, discuss the pros and cons of the position with the administrator/supervisor to determine if this is a good match.
- Enjoy yourself as you give yourself and do good works.
- Share your enthusiasm with friends, family and colleagues.
